<image:title>Mission - Optimizing Data Flow</image:title>
<image:caption>We recognize that the aviation MRO value chain consists of a network of decentralized transactions between complex and competitive agents, and that data must always be protected. New technologies and new levels of automation can provide dramatic efficiency gains and drive value creation—to the tune of tens of billions of dollars a year! We call this optimizing the data flow of MRO transactions. However, without a secure, neutral, and trusted backdrop, such value will go unrealized by the industry. SkyThread is the secure, neutral, and trusted backdrop for the industry to successfully come together and realize the value associated with optimized data flow. With the COVID-19 recovery upon us, timing is critical for the industry to transform now. Realizing this optimization will drive a faster, and far less costly recovery for the aviation industry, and for all who benefit from air travel. Further into the future, an optimized data flow network will eliminate incorrect or mistaken data and dramatically reduce parts fraud which today can lead to delayed or cancelled flights, or even worse, safety accidents. An optimized data flow network will foster a safer, more transparent, and more efficient aviation industry for all stakeholders—from government regulators to the traveling public. <image:title>Overview - Why We’re Here</image:title>
<image:caption>SkyThread is organized to bring the post pandemic aviation industry together to rethink and restructure how it collaborates on matters related to its efficient, profitable, sustainable, and safe operation. To achieve this vision, SkyThread enables the neutral and trusted link for friction-free transactions in the aviation ecosystem. These transactions involve aircraft events, part movements, and technician capacity. SkyThread facilitates this with help from key new technologies such as blockchain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Overview - SkyThread Design</image:title>
<image:caption>SkyThread is comprised of two central components: The Utility Layer, comprising of the 4Ps Entity Data Model on a secure, consensus-driven Blockchain, along with federation infrastructure to connect to other industry Blockchains and off-chain data. The Transaction Layer, comprising of APIs to securely access the Utility Layer and a series of applications—developed by SkyThread and 3rd parties—focused on leveraging Utility Layer data to optimize a variety of aviation transactions. These applications are organized into Solution Bundles, which are described below. Critical to the success of SkyThread is a close partnership with an independent consortium.</image:caption>

<image:title>Overview - Why Blockchain</image:title>
<image:caption>The problem of information sharing in aviation is not new, and the industry has not lacked for intelligent solutions. Through direct involvement in many of these solutions, SkyThread’s team understands that to succeed, we must not just solve for data infrastructure, communications, and analytics, but also trust. Enabling, ensuring, and maintaining trust must be at the core of a successful data exchange, or any digital transformation involving data sharing between multiple stakeholders. SkyThread understands that Blockchain’s core value as a technology is to ensure transactional trust between non-aligned and competitive parties.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This solution includes the use cases associated with the documentation of provenance and air worthiness of all significant aircraft parts as they move on and off wing and through the supply chain. At each step of a parts life journey, SkyThread captures the provenance of the part along with key maintenance activities (events) that support the friction-free movement of parts between companies and aircraft. The life of the aircraft part begins when the part is first delivered on a new aircraft to its first customer. SkyThread works to capture that part as it’s coming out of the Tier 1 / OEM factories on its way to either the aircraft assembly plant, an MRO facility for installation, or to an airline for its line maintenance.</image:caption>

<image:title>MRO - MRO & Components</image:title>
<image:caption>This solution bundle includes the use cases associated with all stages of aircraft maintenance. Over $62 billion is spent each year on maintaining the 25,000 global commercial 120+ seat aircraft. This averages to about $2.4 million per aircraft. The applications in this solution bundle have been designed to improve the data flow between stakeholders when an aircraft is planning to go into maintenance, is in maintenance, and is coming out of maintenance. SkyThread is looking to unleash about $6 billion of value in this very competitive market that is already highly successful. The SkyThread team has seen the inside of engineering, maintenance, and repair organizations during our many implementations of MRO IT systems, our support of the mergers of many airlines, and our visibility into the maintenance cycles from the lens of the Tier 1 parts providers, the airframers, the parts brokers, and the component repair shops.</image:caption>

<image:title>Technicians - Technicians</image:title>
<image:caption>Aircraft Maintenance Technicians are the heart and soul of the industry. Globally, technicians are highly skilled and experienced, have passion for their work, and truly understand its significance. In this solution bundle, SkyThread is working to engage the academies that provide the training, the regulators who authorize the certifications, and the MRO repair stations and airlines that engage the technicians. SkyThread is working to capture the digital certifications being issued today to follow the technician into plane and part airworthiness processes to complete the documentation that “the right technician worked with the right part on the right plane and the right place”. The technician certification includes an element of “self-improvement” which we can capture to track the skill and experience level of this elite group.</image:caption>

<image:title>Inventory - Industry Inventory Reduction</image:title>
<image:caption>The global aviation industry is carrying a staggering amount of aircraft parts inventory—over $100 billion in materials. Prior to the pandemic, the industry had spares inventories staged around the world “just in case” an operator needed a part for a particular aircraft in a particular part of the world. From an aircraft availability standpoint, it might sound like a good thing as you might find a part you need. But airlines also regularly carry aircraft parts in their holds creating a situation that we call “parts chasing airplanes”. A major industry consultancy performs an annual study on the Top 100 A&D companies in the world, and has shown that the high levels of inventory and the low inventory turnover ratios are unsustainable. Another advisory firm estimates that 30% of the $100 billion of spares inventory around the world is “not required”. As the industry emerges from the pandemic, the amount of available parts inventory is in fact set to increase, despite a lasting decrease in demand. This is due in large part to aircraft decommissioning processes which permanently retire old aircraft. In these processes, older but still serviceable parts are salvaged, renewed, and are released back into parts distribution networks. Why should the industry reduce inventory? The carrying costs of inventory are high. The weighted average cost of capital on these stocks is about $10 billion. (This won’t show up on most airlines’ financial statements, but it nevertheless impacts their market valuations.) The operating carrying costs of inventory are an additional 25% and include warehousing, shipping, damage, loss, and obsolescence. Despite these high levels of inventories, it remains problematic to find the right part in the right place at the right time in the right condition with an adequate number of cycles remaining.</image:caption>

<image:title>Revenue - Airline Revenue Enhancement</image:title>
<image:caption>Pre-pandemic, the goal of most revenue enhancement programs was to take a “stressed” system of aircraft availability, capacity, and scheduling and squeeze more flight hours into each day to meet ever rising demand without having to continuously buy new aircraft. In the post pandemic world, this might not seem like an urgent goal as many pundits predict a slow recovery to pre-pandemic growth globally. However, as global airlines slowly recover aircraft from storage, new business models are emerging that avoid the capital crunch of the past. With better information pertaining to the maintenance of fleets, the various “safety stocks” used in the past can be reduced to improve operational efficiencies while also increasing RASM. Those safety stocks or operational insurance items include: · Aircraft Availability (Planes) · Spares Inventories (Parts) · Crew Availability (People) · Slot Availability (Places) · Block Time (Process)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Prior to the pandemic, growth in aviation was strong. To meet demand, aircraft production was steady and spares inventories were staged all around the world to keep planes flying. New aircraft technicians were being trained as quickly as academies could be scheduled and new airlines were sprouting up around the world every month. Then, the bottom fell out. The science around pandemics will prepare us for managing the next global health crisis, but global air travel will never be the same. It must change to become more efficient, flexible, resilient, and sustainable. Over the past 16 months, many aircraft have been and are still grounded. Airlines have gone out of business. Seasoned aircraft technicians have taken an “early retirement.” Over the next 16 months, airlines will reconfigure their fleets. Many thousands of aircraft will be decommissioned and parted out, and thousands more will be resold, converted for new purposes, upgraded for efficiency and safety, and for many, returned to lessors. Many aircraft parts providers have and will continue to merge to survive and to create new economies of scale. Business models will continue to evolve towards “flight hour services” provisioning. Many new aircraft technicians will need to be trained. However, the industry can no longer afford to take 25 years to get these technicians the “life experiences” they need to maintain aircraft of ever increasing complexity. We recall the ancient parable of a blindfolded group of people meeting an elephant for the first time. Everyone could only feel one part of the elephant and described the elephant from their perspective about what they discovered – the leg, the trunk, the ears, the tail, the side. No one, however, could picture or describe the whole of the elephant. In aviation, the companies that support and maintain aircraft are the blindfolded and the elephant is the aircraft. No one entity has the complete picture of the aircraft, its configuration, all of its parts, and their flying condition at any one point of time. There are information gaps. Information sharing, highly valued by many, has remained an elusive goal in aviation due to pervasive trust barriers that exist between stakeholders. It’s time for everyone that has a stake in the safe and profitable aircraft lifecycle to think about their role in bringing down these barriers. The real question now is how the industry creates the “visibility” needed to build a safer, more efficient, more sustainable, and more resilient future. In our newly envisioned ecosystem, the plane takes center stage. We need information about, and for, that plane over its entire life. That data must “survive” the legacy information systems used today to build, fly, and maintain those planes. We call this “Data for the Life of the Aircraft”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Values</image:title>
<image:caption>SkyThread is the industry blockchain that provides data for friction-free transactions for the aircraft from its birth through to its decommissioning. A plane is a million parts flying in common formation, so SkyThread is also focused on the birth of each aircraft part and follows it throughout its life until it becomes unserviceable. Furthermore, nothing happens without qualified technicians. SkyThread captures the technician training certifications and allows the industry to follow technicians through their careers. Of course, the workplaces for aircraft parts and planes are also regulated. SkyThread registers the “place of work” as a critical blockchain validation that the transaction, as reported, is happening. We call this triangulation of the 4Ps– Planes, Parts, People, and Places. Read more about the 4Ps Data Model</image:caption>

<image:title>Values</image:title>
<image:caption>SkyThread works with industry stakeholders to define the data, transaction, and process gaps that cause inefficiency, waste, and delay in the full lifecycle management of Planes, Parts, People and Places. The value to unleash with industry engagement includes: $6B in saved operating costs $15B in increased airline revenue $5B in aircraft lifecycle value creation $14B in inventory value creation</image:caption>

<image:title>Design - The Consortium</image:title>
<image:caption>The founders’ vision is for the industry to form an independent, not-for-profit consortium to collaborate and solve for the trust issues related to the sharing of key data required to “know” the “near real time” position and condition of all aircraft and its parts. Current information systems across the value chain create an imperfect picture of exactly what’s on each plane and where it came from. This is critical information to have each time a plane returns to service or comes out of service for a transaction or event such as maintenance, upgrades, conversions, lease returns, aircraft sale, and eventually decommissioning. The not-for-profit status of the independent consortium will allow members to come together, discuss, and rapidly solve for issues at the industry level while remaining independent with respect to their normal business operations. The founders intend for the consortium to have an important role in managing The Utility Layer that SkyThread is building. The blockchain architecture is comprised of nodes, operating in a proof-of-stake consensus-driven model, managed by consortium members. The founders intend for the consortium to co-create and manage policies for node access, data rights, data usage, and security. The founders intend for neither SkyThread nor the consortium to own the data contained in The Utility Layer. All Utility Layer data will remain owned and controlled by the companies that submit the data into the layer. The founders intend for the consortium to be governed by the consortium leadership elected by its members. The founders intend for it to be an independent, neutral, and trusted organization. Through execution of its mission, the founders intend that it will work together with other industry consortia to share information that would benefit the industry.</image:caption>
